Portsmouth Square is considered the living center of Chinatown and arguably the most
significant historical site in San Francisco. In the 1830's it was the plaza of a
Mexican pueblo, when San Francisco was known as Yerba Buena. Today, Portsmouth Square
remains the heart of San Francisco's Chinatown, with the newly renovated community
recreation park where residents of all ages gather for Chinese chess games, tai chi rituals, community
events and celebrations.
